Creating a Mood: The Role of Music in Crafting Passionate Love Stories
Romance novels are all about creating a mood and atmosphere that will take your readers on a journey of love and passion. And what better way to set the tone than by listening to the right kind of music?
As a fellow writer, I totally get it. Here are my top three favourite types of music to listen to when writing a romance novel:
Classical music for romance: There's something about the sweeping melodies and gentle rhythms of classical music that just screams romance. Whether you're listening to a haunting piano sonata or a lush symphony, classical music can transport you to a world of love and longing. It's the perfect backdrop for scenes of first dates, stolen kisses, and steamy embraces.
Synth wave for nostalgia: Ah, the 80s. A time of big hair, neon colours, and oh-so-romantic ballads. If you're writing a romance novel set in the past or just want to evoke a sense of nostalgia, synth wave is the way to go. From the pulsing beats of New Order to the dreamy vocals of Kate Bush, synth wave music is all about creating a mood that's both romantic and nostalgic.
Movie scores for intensity: Sometimes, you need to ratchet up the intensity in your romance novel. Maybe your characters are in the throes of a heated argument or are finally confessing their love for each other. Whatever the case may be, movie scores can help you create a sense of drama and tension. From the swelling strings of John Williams to the haunting melodies of Hans Zimmer, movie scores are all about creating a sense of epic romance.
So there you have it - my top three favourite types of music to listen to when writing a romance novel. Of course, everyone's taste is different, and you may find that something entirely different works for you. But the most important thing is to find music that helps you create the mood and atmosphere that you're looking for.
And who knows? Maybe one day your romance novel will be turned into a movie, complete with a swoon-worthy soundtrack. One can dream, right?
In the meantime, happy writing, and don't forget to turn up the volume on your favourite tunes.
